You have five separate characters. Your rival, who wants to be the Champion. Trevor, who wants to complete the dex. Tierno, who cares little about grand ambitions and wants to instead create the best dancing Pokemon team. And Shauna, who just wants to have fun and is not entirely sure on what to do. The number five was deliberately chosen. These five characters are symbolic of the five heroes of the Kalos region, which is a 5-pointed star. Both Kalos and France are in the shape of a 5-pointed star. Zygarde, the Pokemon that maintains balance and order in the Kalos region, and has been hidden underground, is associated with "five men." Zygarde 50 Percent form has that as its motif. Zygarde chose five people to save Kalos in its stead. Calem, Serena, Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor. Yes, even Shauna.
This entire journey was a hero's tale about the five heroes of Galar. They are all friends with separate goals and ambitions who eventually come together to protect the world, their future, themselves, their loved ones, other people, and Pokemon. The five heroes of Kalos in the anime were: Ash, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie, and Alain. Pokemon XY&Z is the fifth series in the anime, after Pokemon, AG, DP, and BW.
Masuda put a lot of fucking thought into this game, and I am only scratching the surface. The man is a genius.
