The bar to becoming a professor seems pretty high, actually. Consider that every professor has assistants, a bunch of high tech machinery (implying good funding), and a lot of information that isn't known to the general population. Considering the amount of species they have to study, they'd have to be pretty intelligent; I'd say any pokemon professor is at least intellectually equal to an average PhD holder.
