When Corviknight was released, for example, all I thought was "meh, he's a cool bird I guess" and nothing more, but it was after actually using it in game and battling together that he became my bro and I came to love it, even call it my new favorite. It's the same with starters (or any other Pokemon, really), I love Greninja and have even before he started being shilled, and Amie also had a great role in that, and the same happened with the entire Scorbunny line. I picked it simply because I thought it was the least bad of the three and after going through the whole game together and playing in Camp I now can't help but love Cinderace.
As for Pokemon like Charizard, I've loved it since I was a kid and I'm not going to let GF's overexposure and handling of it dictate what I like or dislike. It was one of my og bros and it'll remain that way.
