Did Gamefreak make Rillaboom so good in competitive on purpose, or was it a complete fluke?

Rillaboom would look better if the green play-dough was leaves since it's a grass type and not a play-dough type.

Look at its stats compared to older starters. It's much more optimized. That said Grassy Glide definitely has a part in it; it turns it from "great Pokemon" into "gen 6 Talonflame." I do wonder if they planned Grassy Glide and the expansion tutors after the main game design was finished and they had finalized giving Rillaboom Grassy Surge.

Won't tapu bulu be better once it comes back with grassy glide? I think the only starter they tried to make strong on purpose was the rabbit, and boom is just coincidence. These are the same people that couldn't grasp people using special aegislash, I'd bet they didn't suspect grassy glide being as strong as it is.

Yes. Better typing, better movepool, stronger, better defense, lower speed (which is good because you'll underspeed the other terrain setters). The only advantage Rillaboom will have will be having Fake Out and Knock Off, and being faster if you're trying to run a high speed set.

I don't really think they make many decisions in relation to competitive. They probably just wanted the starters to be great ingame, because normies get attached to their strong starter who carries them. If comp autists end up liking it cuz of competitive too its just a bonus.
