Aurelio Voltaire often talks about how he got started, because he was writing songs and trying to sing them for people, but that it just wasn't sticking. Guy at the music shop told him to learn to play, and he did. It didn't have to be good enough to show off or anything, just enough to support the songs that he wanted to sing, giving his vocals that extra something to stand on. His guitar playing isn't anything spectacular even still, but he's very particular as a composer, and he knows that hiring other, more competent instrumentalists to record the other instruments on the album can really bring his ideas to life.
