- I don't think "Ash" would exist as his rival, it'll have to legit be Richie or the actual Red, as an anime about Gary needs to actually challenge him. I'd bank on Richie as his rival. Either that, or a more competent Team Rocket admin.
The episodes would have Gary being quite knowledgeable but also insufferable, kind of the opposite of OS Ash. His difficulties lie in living up to the status of his grandfather, while also attempting to grow out of his shadow. He's knowledgeable, but not necessarily wise or caring which his episodes would slowly attempt to teach him.
Sabrina sees the potential in him and travels with Gary in order to better herself and better control her powers, Surge for similar reasons and being bored in his gym.
