>>44935643The item restriction eventually turned out to be one of the design flaws of this mechanic. You couldnt have more than one Mega Evolution per team OR have a freedom of choice which Pokemon to Mega Evolve without wasting item slots. As Megas were extremely unbalanced power level wise even between each other, everyone eventually only started using the most powerful Megas (pretty much just Gengar, Salamence, Kang, Metagross and Ray by the end of gen 7). Moreover the individual Mega Stones started taking a ton of bag space, increasing the item bloat which was already pretty bad due to shit like Arceus plates existing. So adding even more Mega Evolutions would only exacerbate all of these problems.
From a design perspective a lot of Mega evolution designs were to put it mildly underwhelming and begged for a redo. Gigantamax designs for Pokemon that also got a Mega before showcased how much GameFreak improved on designing the „super sayian” forms between generations.
