Best way to play HGSS

I want to play HGSS for the first time(I played gen 2 as a kid) but I've read it has a lot of problems especially regarding the level curve.
Is there a fix or romhack that fixes this?
Or is there a version of HGSS that is superior to the vanilla one

It's fine as is for your first playthrough. Johto definitely has glaring problems but they don't ruin the game, especially when there's a lot of extra content in Kanto, the Pokeathon, after beating Red, etc.

If you're playing on an emulator, you could maybe speed during up wild battles to avoid grinding forever. There are a couple romhacks that try to "fix" the game, but they're not perfect either.

Tl;dr HGSS won't hurt you and is fine to play on its own, especially for the first time

Honestly the level curve is overstated. It's only a serious issue when it comes to Kanto because you pretty much can't catch any new useable mons there. The trainers levels are too low at times but you aren't playing these games for their difficulty. If you really want a romhack to fix this then you can try Sacred Gold/Storm Silver though they add a bunch of other things that may not to be your taste.

get a GBA emulator and download pokemon pyrite, it's a rom hack made from pokemon crystal that fixes:
>level curve
>redesigns routes a bit (just adds more grass and more trainers)
>items during battle are not allowed, nor is shift mode
>more pokemon available at an early level
>don't need to worry about trade mons being unavailable
>gyms are harder, you can't use items inside a gym nor can you leave, you must beat every trainer + leader in one go
>experience is fixed so you can't overgrind or just use on pokemon to powercreep on everything

Theres an exp drought and you have no way to reasonably dig out of it if you fall behind.

If you want to avoid it don't fuck around with your team too much around badge 6.

I play unaltered mainline games with cycling teams of more than 6 and I have never had trouble with Johto's level curve. Anyone who is truly hindered by the level curve just sucks at the game. Full stop.
The main points are as follows:
>If you have a half decent team in terms of moveset and didn't somehow stumble into 0 IV Pokemon being 10 levels under Lance shouldn't be a problem, let alone any of the 4 proceeding him
>If it is a problem for you (this is advice that applies to ALL elite 4/champions in all games) the trick isn't to grind Victory Road Pokemon it's to buy all your items ahead of time so you don't lose money and beat your head against the elite four with raw itemless attempts until you're ready because the EXP yield is way snappier
>If just having lower level pokemon really triggers you the game IS designed around keeping you on pace with the E4 and Claire and such if you dont use repels, fight all the wild encounters you come across (even when they become lower level than you, a trip through the ice cave with no running is still a level for two Pokemon), backtrack to find all the backtracking trainers in places like Union Cave, and make sure to collect phone numbers and take trainers up on rematches, delete people who call about swarms once you have the Pokemon
>A less committal and slow workaround is running a 5 man team and picking up a random victory road or legendary pokemon at the end of the game

Yes, if you're not careful you can run into a position of being severely underleveled for the elite four, you have to take Johto slow, it's easily the most slow paced Pokemon game and it demands you play at that pace or be left exposed and vulnerable to the Claire/E4 level jump. However the solution to this problem isn't nearly so insurmountable or tedious as people pretend it is. As long as your team building is a step above "just a bunch of attack oriented Pokemon with a random assortment of 4 attack moves" you'll be able to take on these challenges underleveled. And if you truly can't manage to take on the fights that underleveled 2-3 failed attempts at the elite four will have you just about leveled up enough to take it on successfully.

The Johto Jump is a pitfall that the game definitely can trap you with but it's fucking retardedly easy to fix it or avoid it. I can't fathom these people that pretend like it's some insurmountable issue that ruins the game and not a minor gripe. If I can run 8 Pokemon (In Gold, in HGSS I ran 11 for the Johto portion) and not have a problem with the level curve you can run 5 or 6 and be perfectly fine.

My tip as someone that replays this often

Use 2 Pokemon until the third Gym then catch other 2 that catch your fancy, in that way you can avoid exp starvation, if you use and focus on only 4 Pokemon the exp curve isn't that bad, save the last two slots for a tentacool and a flier, that will save a lot of time and space
