Was Z-move truly the worst gimmick in the series?
Literally nobody gave fuck when it was removed in Gen8 but people still want Megas to be back

Mega is good because it can help weaker mons to viable but they give most of them to stronger mons and make them overpowered.

Z-moves and dynamax instead make it accessible to every mon so every mon can make use of it. So all weaker mon can have their turn to shine. But it also means powerful mons become overpowered too since it can be used by all.

If only there is a gimmick that only helps the weaker mons to be viable and not makes the powerful mons overpowered

I like battle gimmicks, they spice up the meta in different ways. They don't have to stay around forever, in fact they shouldn't. Dynamax is also fun to play with but I don't want it to stay forever.

Megas are a particular case because they're specific buffs to pokémon and they also offer a new pokémon design. Sadly their gameplay mechanic is utter shit, since the only one mega limitation makes almost every mega worthless. The solution to this would be giving every single pokémon a viable mega, but that's never happening.

People didn't complain as much because they got something that was almost the same (G-moves) but we're strictly inferior when the game finally released.
Zmoves gave weird buffs to random things allowing for more varied and interesting builds.
Gmoves and Gmax moves are just nukes with an added effect.

Z-moves gave otherwise weaker pokemon an edge to turn the tides with the right move. In team previews it would be tough to determine who would be holding which Z-Crystal and how their build will revolve around it. Mega Evolution was only restricted to a select bunch, overpowering most Pokemon who were either already strong or otherwise irrelevant to an average trainer's team. Dynamax just essentially combines parts of those features together, and is considered too powerful in the competitive scene to be used in singles matchups.

this is in general, combining gameplay, lore, fan response etc.

not a lot to say about megas, they're the fan favorite (pic related, today i will remind them) and they're pretty balanced for both singles and doubles.

z moves are undoubtedly the most competitive and skillfull gimmick out of the 3, especially for doubles, they were alright but ofc weren't as liked as megas.

dynamax/gigantamax's fan response was pretty bad, "IT JUST GETS BIGGER", doesn't make sense at all and is a lazy gimmick. it's like a hybrid between megas and z moves but bad. competitive-wise it's fairly nice for doubles but completely overpowered in singles.

These are the facts. Cope and seethe more fags.

I love Z-Status moves and they're my favourite gimmick. It's a big commitment for one janky little effect that can make or break a match and I love that.

It was a step in the right direction after Megas. You weren't restricted to just the Pokemon GF gave a Mega too; it was Universal. It still had the problem of having to pick your user before the match, however, so you couldn't adjust on the fly if you Z move user had a bad matchup.

Honestly this like alot of the most interesting part of z moves were the status ones like I remembered having a blast playing around with z sunny day Leafeon and sweeping for days (though I wish Leafeon had solar blade in gen 7 which would of been even more fun).

Dynamax is only usable in select areas.
Megas and Z-moves trivialize the main campaign way more, but nobody cares because the main campaign is already trivial to anyone with an age in the double digits.

Because Z-Moves are set up in a way that they aren't allowed to appear outside of Alola.
Z-Power to make them work is only possible with prolonged exposure to Ultra Space, be it Ultra Space itself or a Pokemon like Necrozma that can harness and spread that power, and GameFreak clearly has no interest in making Necrozma or Ultra Wormholes relevant again.

At most, you could use one big unga bunga move, or one big setup move, and only 8 of them could both do damage and have a secondary effect (most of those secondary effects being pretty underwhelming). And it came at the cost of an item slot.
If you could use 3 of them in a row, and the unga bunga came with an added effect, and you didn't need to use an item slot, and you got double HP, then I'd call it a win button.

I always thought it seemed interesting. Just imagine would gym leader battles would be like in a game that had z moves, dynamax/gigantamax, and mega evolution, all once per battle? It would make gym leader battles really insane, with the leader having two nukes, and dyna/gigant for three turns as well. I guess I just want more depth to pokemon battles, even if it were to break the game for online play.

Dynamax exists. Z moves aren't perfect but they had SOME balance put into them. Such as requiring a item slot and being one time use. On top of that they gave certain mons coverage (heatran bloom doom), there were interesting z move sets and it was nice seeing certain mons get reliable accurate moves like rock types.

Megas breathed life into so many Pokemon even if they weren't balanced.

Dynamax is literally 4 z moves, a hp boost and it literally is just "the pokemon gets bigger." In game it's not really interesting to use, it's terribly balanced in competitive and even in the anime it doesn't really lead to better or interesting battles from a animation POV. It's not balanced, it's not interesting, not thought out and it's just lazy overall.

If the games didn't let you megaevolve a Rayquaza holding a Z-Crystal they would obviously forbid you from using Dynamax and Megaevolution at same time, they would just make you chose one gimmick and holding a Z-Crystal would block both super saiyan mode and macrofalco mode
