I have been wanting to start my own fakemon region for such a long time now but I have been having serious art block for quite some time. Everytime i come up with a good idea for my starters i look back at the starters we already have and scrap the idea. Maybe i’m being too picky but anyone willing to help?

Think of a connecting theme.
Ever since gen 4, they've all had themes.
Gen 4 is based on myths and legends, with the world turtle, Sun Wukong, and Poseidon.
Gen 5 is based on high-class warriors, with Louis XIV, Zhang Fei, and a samurai.
Gen 6 is based on RPG classes, with a fighter, mage, and rogue.
Gen 7 is based on the circus, with an archer, strongman, and circus freak.
And gen 8 is based on entertainment, with music, sports, and film (James Bond specifically).
Obviously, the themes are jumping off points rather than something to be strictly adhered to.

OR, you could make something YOU really want to make rather than having to follow a theme like gamefreak has. I feel like you could come up with some real cool "Pocket MONSTERS" rather than "Pocket FURRIES WITH A JOB/OCCUPATION". Just go wild and don't feel like you have to adhere to a theme, schedule, or specific audience like NuFreak does, because it has not been working out for them at all. SERIOUSLY. Every starter design from Gen 6 onward has just straight up been furry with job/occupation (apart from MAYBE Greninja, who is just a shillmon anyway) and they all look fucking awful and disgusting because they look and feel so unbelievably FORCED. Any of these fucks try to tell you otherwise, AND THEY WILL, BECAUSE I HOPE YOU REALIZE WHAT SITE THIS IS, fuck them. They only think a Pokemon design is "BASED" if you are able to shove your cock inside of it, because that is the absolute state of this franchise/fanbase right now and they are all hypocrites so ignore them if they act like cocksuckers. They are all closet furries who have no idea what they are talking about and are just trying to cope. DO what you want and make your own designs the way YOU want them to. Don't feel like you HAVE to please everyone, because that is not realistic. Be creative and try not to make your designs feel so forced.

The "legit" mons follow some patterns, like:
>fire starter - Chinese zodiac, at least one explicit flame
>water starter - land-and-sea animal
>grass starter - leaves, most of them are reptilian-like
No matter if those patterns are intentional or accidental, if your own fakemons follow them, they'll look a bit more legit.

Regarding the region: if you want, I have a rough draft of a slightly non-linear region based on the Southern Cone, Falklands, plus a chunk of Antarctica.

The issue with forced designs, oddly enough, comes from the lack of insight on theming. It makes you pick random garbage because it "fits", without realizing why.

Best thing to do is just start. Don't overtax yourself. Make sure you get a break.

But as far making starters the RIGHT way. The only thing you need to keep in mind is APPEAL. They have to set the standard for the rest of the dex. There's a lot of pressure in creating good starters because of the need for them to be good. But the easiest way is cater to sensibilities. This is why starters have started becoming more "human" and personalized in recent gens.

Having definitive traits not only makes the designing process easier but it also broadens the likelihood of positive reception for each individual monster. Each design can cater to specific gamer/art consumer demographic. Adding themes also streamlines the designing process sense you already know what you want the set to look like.

Also replicating Gen 1-3 style starters, is going to be difficult All of them are a product of their time. GF back then, only wanted to make cool monsters, but at the same they lack any cohesion as a trio. Gen 2 and 3 starters imo lack synergy when next to each other. Starters should look like a trio. Not three assumingly random designs put together.

But like I said, adding themes and personalization just makes the entire process easier. If you want to make more beastly/animalistic starters in the vein of earlier gens my only advice is to make them cool and try your best to make them synergize, in both style, shapes and colors.

Capybaras are too goofy to be a stoic Steel type, I think they're better as either Water/Psychic (see Slowpoke, Psyduck) or maybe Water/Grass.
Also, earlier stages could be based off guinea pigs, they're closely related and do look similar enough to be an evo line.

Ignore official designs, one of the worst things a fakemon artist can feel is that an official design is too similar to theirs or has the same concept. It's better if your region is full fakemon and there are no official designs. If you want to make a grass monkey, make your own grass monkey, ignore rillaboom and simisear. Many times you'll feel a concept has already been made, but has been made really poorly. If you think sawsbuck and stantler are boring and that you could make something more interesting with similar design elements, do it.

This, the best fangame i've ever played, allowed me to choose almost any available 1st stage fakemon in the game. The grass/fire/water trio meme doesn't need to be followed strictly, if you don't make starters and allow the player to choose from dozens of different evolutionary lines, each player will have more unique expereinces. There are so many alternatives for starter pokemon.
