There's probably a number of battles like this earlygame but since Pokemon is so easy and the AI is babymode, it's pretty much impossible to trigger unless you're either deliberately trying to lose or they land a crit. I honestly would not be surprised if the games were coded so the rival couldn't get a crit out the gate but who knows.

I'm actually interested in this. It would be kind of cool if the game let's you lose to your rival or other important NPCs without just making you do it over again.

The HAu battle as you land on Malie(?) Island.
Feels real fucking bad too because that fight is genuinely challenging when you don't see it coming, especially in Ultra without the EXP Share, so to see him basically say "Oh, I won! Whatever." makes you feel like shit.

I got my ass kicked by Hau in the battle you have after arriving by ship once and the game let me progress. I think you can also lose to Lusamine too and still progress.

Raichu's really fast and strong for that point and a 180 BP Z-Move is going to hurt. It's not super difficult but it did catch me off guard

I think I saw someone say that you can lose to Sina/Dexio and still progress through the game. It seems like Sun/Moon has a lot of battles like these.

It's not overly difficult, but h has some heavy hitters, especially since I chose Rowlet and had to go up against Flareon, Tauros, and Raichu-it can just really fuck you up unprepared. His starter's Z-Move isn't really anything to scoff at either, its pretty handily reaming any Pokemon not resistant to it at that point in the game.

i lost to lusamine on purpose to see what would happen and it just sent me back to the pokemon center. went back to ultra space, no new dialogue or cutscenes
