I think everyone looks for a Pokémon substitute, but what people really want is a good official Pokémon game and no copycat is going to scratch that itch. I play Masters and it depresses me that it's the best thing about Pokémon right now to me unless you're into sakuga with the anime. But I'm barely thinking about Pokémon anymore, and I used to go hard with learning everything I could.
There are so many other good things to invest yourself into. I started properly getting into Digimon this year, and it had nothing to do with wanting a Pokémon replacement or being discontent. I had downloaded the BDs to Adventure years ago, kept putting off watching it properly, and then learned about the Adventure reboot. So I started going hard with playing catch-up for Digimon and learning everything I could from a chronological point of view so that I had a solid understanding of franchise history. Not all of it is good of course, but I find it fascinating nonetheless.
But I'm focusing on a number of different interests right now, from video games to manga to anime to self-improvement, and Pokémon doesn't really fit with any of it. My friend mentioned the Direct to me yesterday, and I felt nothing, no interest, no intrigue, nothing. Just apathy. I'll probably always hold some resentment towards the franchise just like I'll always hold some love for what it was, but I've moved on.
