It’s a mistake of an evolution brought about by trading features between graveler and Machoke, works great for Machamp, didn’t work out so well for Golem. Just a snake stuck in a rock. I imagine it’s as if charmander got a little bigger and browner, then he rolls up in rocks like the rock shell mollusk.
