Ya Boy is one of the greatest characters in the series, but Ghetsis is as well. Cyrus is pretty alright too. Asshole almost ruined my Nuzlocke Run.

Villains don't need to be complex or be "relatable" in order to be good. Being an enjoyable or intimidating on screen presence is all that's needed. Cyrus and Ghetsis are great for that reason.

A truly good villain needs to be relatable and Cyrus' ideals are utterly inhuman and something almost no one can actually relate to. cool but edgy villains can't last forever, there's only so many ways that you can rewrite "i want to destroy the world with this legendary because im evil and insane" before it gets old, and it did get old with gen 6 when Lysander and Cyrus are effectively the same but literally everyone is bored to death by Lysander. Pokemon started with small stakes with team rocket pretty much just being petty thieves but they upped the stakes every game after gen 3 and there has to be an end to that increase

I prefer Ghetis, and I do love Guzma, but I wouldn't say Cyrus is bad. He's just...average.

He has pros:
>Making sure his plan was a secret and only telling the Admins respectively what he knew they'd want to hear, because he was aware no sane person would want to help his true ambitions
>Intentionally hired idiots in the hopes that they'd be competent enough to do their jobs but dumb enough to never question orders or uncover his plot
>The above actually works out for the most part
>Small bits and pieces of his backstory are given throughout the game, such as how he was abused by his parents and grew up emotionally stunted and his grandfather regrets not trying to intervene
>His OG theme is intimidating, especially when he's fucking ripping you to shreds in a Nuzlocke run the asshole
>His team has plenty of cool choices, except for the generic "mandatory Gyarados" that most evil bosses seem to have in older gens
>Reveals that Pokeballs limit the power of legendries, just giving a justification for why he's not just master-balling them

Cons:

>All of his team share multiple common weaknesses to the point where, should you be properly prepared, he's relatively easy compared to most antagonists

>He GIVES YOU THE MASTER BALL because he "doesn't need it"
>In all of his infinite wisdom, he also lets the player FREE THE ONLY POKEMON CAPABLE OF BREAKING THE RED CHAIN despite knowing FULL WELL exactly how that'd play out yet seemingly thinking it'd still go his way

Cyrus is the most luke-warm of all Pokemon villains. Very meh. I'd take Rocket, Skull, and even Yell over them any day. At least he isn't as bad as Lysandre, Archie, Maxie, Rose, or Lusamine.

This was absolutely perfect, but also the moment you realize Pokemon doesn't have the attempted gravitas for this stuff. Lysandre being Cyrus but explicit was just bizarre, if similarly amusing for the contrast of it.

But SM's themes are unironically more mature than DPPt's, simply because they're more grounded and relatable to people growing up. Real children won't ever have to deal with all emotion in the world being erased, but they may have to deal with abusive parents or feelings of worthlessness or lack of achievements

Ran out of room, but basically my point is that Cyrus had potential and on the surface he looks good but the more you look into him the worse he starts to get. He's better than the original Maxie/Archie and Rose, but that'd about it. I feel roughly the same way about Lysandre too. I've already said some people out there would think that's a good idea, but it's an extreme minority. Cyrus wants a world so out there that even cult leaders like Jim Jones would think it's too crazy. I like some shlocky JRPGs myself but it's not particularly interesting writing or even fitting of Pokemon

Lysandre isn't really bad himself. If anything it was everything outside of Lysandre that was the problem. His teammates, the region, the people he interacted with, hell the whole Pokemon world. Lysandre just doesn't fit in the franchise because the pokemon world is so perfect that we don't see this filth Lysandre is so desperate to clear besides the people in his crew. Gamefreak were too pussy to write a real Hitler-like character.
It's why I don't really agree with these comparisons between Cyrus and Lysandre because Cyrus always planned to fuck over the rest of team galactic and leave his world for himself while Lysandre made no sense considering his taste in people. Gamefreak was too scared to make Lysandre appear even a little right. I wouldn't call Lysandre a bad character.

As usual, /vp/anons have shit tastes. Serious villains bring excitement to the plot just as much as comedy relief villains bringing entertainment to the plot. Both are just as great and can be just as well-written when put in enough effort. Hell, both Guzma and Cyrus have the same "parent abuse" backstory and both have their soft sides. There's no reason to reject one for the other, especially since both are commonly present in children's franchises.

There's a lot of talk of edgy villains but honestly I just want intimidating human threats, not the "ooga booga evil monster" climaxes that the series seems to be going towards in USUM and SwSh.

It worked in Gen 3 since Team Magqua were the main focus until they lost control and it was a novel concept, but in Gen 8 there's no threat for the whole game up to Wyndon, then you have a brief scrap with an idiot and his unwitting employees after which he immediately surrenders and you just pop up to the roof to sort out Eternatus then you're done.

Team Galactic were dumb employees too but at least that was a cult of personality around Cyrus, and they were all being mislead into working towards a "better future" instead of just being Rose's generic corporation minimum wage staff giving up their lunch breaks because security is non-existant and some kids are tearing up the place
