I always associated abra with a koala because it’s so sleepy.
I guess they’re fox-ish but like several gen 1 Pokémon they’re really just “monsters” which is a lot more interesting than being any specific thing(s).

Yeah, artist is just using what they perceive to be generic esoteric symbols.
I still think the line has a pentagram theme though, look at the shape of their heads.

to be fair alakazam has a 6 pointed star in japanese red and green. to japanese dudes in the 90s they could easily be perceived has interchangeable symbols and, although not as often, the 6 pointed star is indeed represented in occultism

abra and kadabra are obvious foxes with tibetan mysticism/zener card motifs

alakazam is based on a buddhist monk with a baphomet star head, it also has some minor fox qualities

Fox. The shape of the head and star are signs of magic (and shorthand for Western style magic) but it looks too much like an alien wizard fox.
The spoons are still weird considering its design looks like magic wizard but has psychic powers.

They are clearly inspired by baphomet with the pentagram and all that, but abra is very cat like, kinda resembling a bakeneko and other cat youkai, and the entire line is obviously very fox like too and probably inspired by kitsunes, but more kitsune-wedding kitsune than nine-tailed kitsune.
