Why do pokegirls look significantly older than their actual age?
Pic related is supposed to be 10 but could easily be a high schooler design if it were in any other anime.

Because "The protagonists are 10 years old" is a meme, like literally the actual dictionary definition of a meme. The vast majority of the games never mention the characters' age but people just repeated "The protagonists are 10 years old" often enough that people believe it.

It literally only started because of the anime and it’s unusual ceremonial journey spiel. The protags in the original GB/GBC games are preteens, but I don’t think that stuck for the rest of the series

Anime-styled characters look so separated from reality they really don't look any age. Even as an actual 10 year old kid I thought most MCs that were suposedly at that age felt way older than me.

When Pokemon first appeared on the air, there were a lot of shows in real life in the 90s and the early 2000s, and even before pokemon existed, portraying older actors to play high schoolers was common. Take Mean Girls for example, or Donnie Darko. Both Movies featured characters in their 20s playing 16-18 year olds.
