Let’s take a look at all the other regional cats.
>Gen 1, Meowth/Persian. Part of the original 151 so it’s memorable because of nostalgia. Also plays a very large role in the anime.
>Gen 2, Espeon/Umbreon. Both are eeveelutions which is already a set on being popular due to being linked to Eevee. Both also received major roles in spinoff games, and have a unique themes tied to them.
>Gen 3, Skitty/Delcatty. Skitty was the decimated cutemon of Gen 3 and was used by the female protag of the anime. Delcatty has a distinct lunar design and is not just a plain white cat.
>Gen 5, Purrloin/Liepard. Reskinned meowth, but this time with a thief twist. Based on some famous Japanese character, and both have bright purple colors to pop out.
>Gen 6, Espurr/Meowstic. Extremely distinctive design, espurr was also a huge meme for its blank stare and meowstic got plenty of merch.
>Gen 7, Litten and Alolan Meowth. One was a starter and the other became a meme after it evolved.
>Gen 8, Galarian Meowth. Based off of the cat of Gen 1. Has a stupid design that’ll make you remember it for the rest of your life.
Glameow has a boring palette so it’s just a grey cat that becomes a fatter grey cat. Also it was overshadowed by shinx who became people’s favorite Sinnoh feline.

Sneasel is a fucking weasel yokai. Espeon is literally based on a cat yokai and Umbreon’s Japanese name is a reference to how black cats are considered lucky in Japan, pic very related.
Hoppip also literally has neko in its name, but I’d argue Hoppip is even a more forgettable catmon than Glameow.

It's deceptively strong though. Unlike say Purlion or Meowth, Glameow and Purugly not only hit like they're trucks, but also are surprisingly fast. Their movepool is also surprisingly good, unlike some of the other "it's just a catmon"s.

Realistically, only the Rinrin line was intended to be cats, and they were cut last minute (Rinrin is the "most complete" of the cutmons, with its own stats and movepool). Espeon/Umbreon and Sneasel are similar to cats or based on elements of cats or cat yokai, but that's really no different from Shinx or Litleo etc. Actually now that I think about it the electric tigers were also cut from Gen 2.
