Honestly Tox is one of the few nugen mons with Gen 1 design philosophy
Its not any different from things Electibuzz or Magmar. Its a mishmash of different creatures than a stylized cartoon animal

there were actually quite a few mons in the Gen 8 dex with this philosophy. Duraludon, Hatterene, Indeedee, Coalossal, Falinks, and probably few more that I'm forgetting. There's a theme there and the mon is pretty obviously based off of it, but past that it's a monster with no discernible animal of origin. Even Inteleon falls into this somewhat with the fact that it takes several lizard traits and adaptations and makes them into one composite "spy" toolset rather than just being "water lizard" and that's the end of it.

I know, that's why I said "somewhat." Still , it has traits from multiple species of lizards combined into one monster, which is more than can be said for other "my mom's x" like the Rattata line or the Pikipek line, or the Yamper line. It lies somewhere between the two
