I wouldn't want a game that's entirely doubles, but a game that mixes it up with singles and doubles for major and minor trainers, maybe with other battle styles mixed in as well

I kind of agree with him. Doubles are faster, but only if you build your team around doubles. If your team has moves that hit both targets like Rock Slide, Hyper Voice, Earthquake, Muddy Water, Blizzard, Dazzling Gleam, Heat Wave, etc then it would be faster by virtue of attacking all opponents at once, but if there are few Double battles in the game then your team would mostly have single target moves which make battles feel like they take forever

Not just that but you can also use two attacks on one Pokémon and 2 are out at the same time. There's also no switching shenanigans but that's less relevant in the single player experience. Story NPC Pokémon probably aren't running Protect either.

Time-wise, if you aren't OHKOing things before they move then a turn takes 4 whole Pokemon's worth of animations, and move selection is thinking through two different actions along with selecting targets for it.

turn-wise doubles might be faster, but you're still a human person.

Have you never played an actual Pokemon game?

You start the game with a level 5 starter, you don't start with stuff like landorus who can use earthquake and rock slide. You run with shit like pound and absorb for like 15 levels.

I meant in the sense that playing a game centered around it would make battles more tedious since you have to wait on the actions of FOUR Pokemon every turn, and if it's centered around Doubles, that means Protect, Wide Guard, etc. are going to be very prominent. Some spread moves have their damage reduced, but you still have to be mindful to not wear down your other party members. If you're not outright sweeping, the battles against the AI will take longer.

You can also have both Pokémon hit one of the opponent's. Battles in Colosseum and XD didn't take forever. I don't see why it would be any worse in the main games.

The mainline pokemon games would be better if each route was designed like it was supposed to be a challenge with a good final battle but the early routes should teach the fundamentals of battle like stat boosting/lowering, statuses, switching, etc.
