The demo version was filled with red flags, but there could have easily been more open areas, a PSS/Dexnav upgrade for the Rotom Dex, and some facility with the malasadas to manage /reset EVs.
The jump to gen 7 meant the practice of third versions was finally over. Zygarde was confirmed to have a role, and they were re-using the extra terrestrial elements of XY. There was no reason not to be hyped.
No one could have predicted none of that would actually matter and was just PR/trailer fluff with no substance.
