It should be the linear cinematic experience that the main series keeps trying and failing to be because they have to adhere to series traditions. In a spin off, they could make the game just about the story instead of the usual adventure, and do what it takes to make it work. Lillie's complete party will be predetermined so that each of her pokemon can be given personalities and character arcs.

It's a romp through a revamped Kanto. Your starter is a level 5 Clefairy and you start in Vermillion City. There's new gyms, including one in Lavender and one in Pallet, and the Cinnabar and Vermillion City gyms are shut down. The dex expands from 150 to 200 pokemon, adding all the cross gen evos, Lucario, Mimikyu, and Togepi. The main story, as it were, is the invasion of Ultra Beasts into Kanto, and you have to help defeat them between badges.
