The anime is and always has been canon. It's supervised by Game Freak who provide the staff with reference material to follow. Otherwise, the anime wouldn't be able to exist because they'd have to take liberties and make shit up.

Elemental armor isn't new, all the complaints about it just show that Pokefags have either never seen any other anime, or take mechanics too literally (which no other fanbase does, see also with the pokedex meme; it the game mechanics and lore contradict either other, it's the game mechanics that are false, not the lore)

Get the fucking game mechanics out of your head. Game mechanics have no place outside of a video game. An anime can't operate on video game logic, it has to operate on more realistic logic.

Bulbasaur never used Whirlwind anyway. It was just a dubbing error. Whirlwind is called "Blow Away" in Japanese, so Ash didn't command Bulbasaur to use Whirlwind, he just told it to blow the spores away. It wasn't the actual move, it was just an improvised move.
