models and sprites are different, and they have different strengths and weaknesses. but like i said, models have way more potential than sprites, and, more than this, i would never encourage a broad return to sprites in the main games moving forward (unless, say, we had a game that greatly limited the pokedex, and we had a team that did extensive frame-by-frame sprite animations on the remaining pokemon -- i don't think a project like this would be feasible, and i don't think it would appeal to many people)
all i've said is gamefreak did an incredibly shit job of implementing the models, and that's why there are so many nostalgiafags who earnestly believe returning to sprites is preferable to updating the models and their animations.
