The good thing about Gen 1 games though is if you press Spacebar the game's speed goes into the millions on modern machines.
Closing any distance in less than a fraction of a second is fun.
As for me, I somehow dislike Gen 2 more than 1. Maybe because I started to 1, I dunno.
3 is my favorite.

I grew up with gen 1 and i think its at some aspects absolutely terrible. I love gen 1 designs, i love Kanto etc, but is it really that hard to admit that the game is a clusterfuck?
That being said, if FRLG implemented more postgame and had the physical/special split, and maaaaybe such things like the day/night mechanic, it would be easily at least top 2 pokemon game imo.

Gen 1 games are the closest out of all gens to be considered straight up bad, yes. But that doesn't stop me, you or anybody else from enjoying them as nostalgic/retro games that started it all. You can still have fun with them (a lot of people even enjoy abusing glitches) even in 2020.

Objectively, a little bit. There are tons of shitty battle mechanics that just make you wonder how they even got past testing and the sheer amount of glitches in it would make Sonic '06 feel like a fucking masterpiece. Subjectively, no. Gen 1 is one of my least favorite gens, but the first games are still enjoyable to play and they definitely have their charm.

This entire franchise is an evolution. Monsters were basic, simple, and lacked unnecessary depth and design because it didn’t need it at the time. The monsters over time evolved through the process of critical reception and popularity of what worked and what didn’t. By all means this doesn’t mean the end product is necessarily better than the first, but we wouldn’t have anything else that we have today if the inception of gen 1 wasn’t so successful. Gen 1 is your roots, but I would also say caveman living is a trash way of life, so thank god I was around to experience gen 1 when it was the only game around, and around long enough to see the franchise flourish.

Most gen 1 fans have moved on from playing Pokemon and aren't active in the fandom. They pick up merch or play through Red on Emulator, but they aren't here as they don't want anything to do with the new games.

I played through RBY when it came out on 3DS VC and even caught em all. The only value you're going to get out of it is the novelty or nostalgia if you played it when you were younger. Besides that you should avoid Gen 1 if you want to play a game that you'll have fun with.

Thats fucking great though. It will rarely happen in a single playthrough, and really just exists to make competitive players piss and shit their pants
Plus it makes a bit of sense in-universe

It's flawed, but at least it feel like there's some genuine effort and heart put into it. And desu i prefer slow paced, personal narrative focused experience of two first gens than more story focused and a-to-b style of more modern games.
