The gameplay of Mystery Dungeon has existed since 1980 and there is a big community dedicated to games like those, which inspired many of the RPG tropes that you take for granted today. Pokémon for example was inspired by Final Fantasy and Earthbound which in turn were inspired by Dragon Quest, which was inspired by Wizardry which was based on Dungeon Crawlers or Rogue-likes (Mystery Dungeons) which were an effort to make text games more fun by using D&D dungeon crawling. The first computer cursors were developed to play these games. Point is, people have enjoyed these kind of games since before you were born and continue to do so even today, so there is plenty of evidence on their merits even if YOU don't like them.
