don't even bother getting sucked into this argument. "it's literally just [my mom's X]" is fine, particularly for gen 1, which out of necessity is going to include a bunch of standard monsters. not every monster needs some retarded gimmick, and you need a sort of baseline set of monsters to move forward. a stylized bird or a stylized dragon or a stylized goldfish are all fine.

Why are you blaming Gen 3? Gen 3 mons still adhered to Gen 1 and 2 design philosophies, and there are no "character" or mascot mons. The ONLY difference is that the designs were slightly more detailed and colorful because the hardware allowed for it (Game Freak still sprited mons first before drawing them, like in Gen 1 and 2).

Seel is literally just a seal, Krabby is just a crab, goldeen is just a goldfish. Gen 1 had charm to compensate for their lackluster designs. now we have lackluster designs and little/no charm.
