Should i actually buy this game? Is it as hand-holding as 7th gen? Am i just better off buying breath of the wild dlc?

no, Swoosh and Splatoon 2 are the only good 1st party DLCs in my experience

breath of wild dlc is actually a challenge and adds new content. Pokemon just adds pokemon that should have been in and adds two very basic areas for those pokemon. Get BOTW dlc

Yes. Free revives and healing out the wazoo but the gyms themselves can be challenging

I enjoyed SwSh a lot more than the majority of people on the board but even I can't imagine dropping 90 smackers on it at once, it felt more reasonable paying for the DLC when it first came out because I'd already owned the base game for a while at that point
buy the base game pre-owned and see what you think first

swsh is enjoyable but you can easily tell that the entire product was rushed to oblivion and imo makes it feel more hollow than your standard pokemon game. the game does add a lot of qol features in terms of ui and battling but the new gimmicks feel like they had barely any thought put into how they function. I'd say pick up the botw dlc now and if you really want to play swsh you should look out for a cheap used copy.
