I don't think so. At all.

I had never heard of their games until 5 years ago, and I have been playing since the first gen. Pokémon was a stroke of luck for them, their other games don't seem to have anything extraordinary

Absolutely not. Pokemon took off because of its unique concept, capturing a ton of different species of monsters to raise and build a team with as you like. It was a good concept not ever done before, so good in fact that it exploded in the US despite RPGs being a dead genre here at the time. If Gamefreak hadn't made Pokemon they likely would have died early on due to lack of funding.

That soft shading he can do with markers is really nice. Wish he’d do more of that and less digital coloring, the coloring is one of the biggest problems most of his recent stuff has.

I feel like people don't bring this up much at all but if Pokemon didn't have such a strict schedule and Game Freak was given all the time in the world to make a Pokemon game, I think I'd still have doubts. These are the people who thought Festival Plaza was a good idea

Yesterday I watched Tamashii's video about Quinty and its interesting that the game was already very generous compared to other games of the time, you infinite lives so it seems making the games easy was always kind of their thing even before pokemon.

Town definitely seemed odd from the pitched concept compared to product. Mentioned a focus on local area, but the character level of individuality is more typical random place instead of a small place you can know everyone. Said to be for people who don't have much time, but battle system is designed for long haul with Mario Party style map and lots of turns. And since it was Gear Project, they didn't need to release by a specific window. They seemed excited about it, but misaimed.
