>>45063603This is true, they hit 16m by January. Still shit, though.
>>45063624We'll never know for sure, yeah. I suspect the numbers are probably about half the base game's, maybe less. That's about how well third versions usually do IIRC.
>>45063654It's true, Platinum released about two years later. I'd argue the culture was different back then, though. You didn't have the general "I'll wait for the third version" crowd. Platinum kind of MADE that crowd to begin with, and funnily enough that was the last time they did a true third version.
Even if you argue that the DLC is a non-factor, there's still DP coming off the heels of gen III. I know gen III is well liked on this board, but it was a general cooling down period for the franchise. It was where pokemania died, and in the west it was when Pokemon was played purely by children and "weirdos who can't let go of an old fad". Gen IV ushered in a large resurgence of adult fans as people discovered the appeal of battle facilities, competitive play, and shiny hunting. All of these existed before gen IV, but it was the real kicking off point in terms of popularity.
Lastly, I honestly have no idea how well that DLC bundle is gonna sell. The $90 pricetag is off-putting as hell, traditionally bundles like that go for the standard $60. Maybe Pokemon can overcome sticker shock, maybe not. Can't make an accurate call, but I'm gonna lean towards it not doing so hot and see if I can catch one second hand for collector's value.
