I like the idea of the books, but to make it spooky. Let's have her read a story during the battle, if she finishes her story a pokemon of removed from battle temporarily, party wide debuffs, etc.

That would be a decent way to add chellange, to what's besicly Pokemon's boss battles. Something like "flying gym has tailwind up" "rock gym has stealth rocks from the start"

I was gonna say that gym battles should be like in the anime where the challenger must pick the same number pf pokemon as the gym leader to use. In pokemon generations where they followed the video games, red throws bodies at the gym leaders and it just seemed dumb.

But this is a trainer thread so who cares

I do. I think gyms having certain requirements to enter like certain number of members would be a step up, and it won't be a bother either since we have widespread exp machine and portable pc box. I also think that gym leader fights should expand on what Opal's fight was like and have personalized obstacles for us to face in their battles.

How about this? The gym leader has a pool of six Pokemon they can use in their gym battle, and randomly pick a number of them (depending on badge order, and probably always including their signature 'mon) while you pick the same number from your party, but you don't know which ones the leader will use until the battle.

I do like the idea of conditional gimmicks in a boss's favor, particularly for the Elite 4 as something to make them stand out. But Pokemon is so deeply rooted in parity between battlers than I can't help but feel like it just draws attention to how type match ups and switching favor the player. If the boss beats you because of an advantage you can't replicate, are they actually "better" than you?

Matching Pokemon counts would probably work, provided you don't sweep with type advantages, though whittling down a key Pokemon across your entire team is also satisfying.
