Regardless of personal taste, NSMB shits all over the original Super Mario Bros, because it kept advancing and evolving, sure, not everything's perfect and there are still a few things that were better in older games, but it's obvious the games have kept moving forward, increasing their scope with the passage of time
Pokemon is still designed like an old game at heart, but it has made very little progress overall outside of certain things like iterating on their own battle system
It's not retro, it's outdated

The older Pokemon games were still buggy and always had shitty graphics, but they stood out because, for their time, they were new and interesting, they introduced new things that changed both the metagame and the rest of the game as well
Nowadays they're simply behind the times, from just about every point of view
