The only real difference is that Orre isn't as squeaky clean as your usual Pokemon region, a lot of the locations being rather run down and there being far more more roughneck type NPCs. But being Pokemon its all aesthetic, at worst one town has outmatched incapable police rather than none at all, a brute admin punches a guy, and the bad guys might use explosives to cut off your advance. (Which have nothing on the GALACTIC BOMB)

Gen 5 were the most mature pokemon games. Attempted child murder alongside a message that is way more relevant today than the time it was made.
Even Gen 6 was edgier with all the lore on the war.
Coliseum and gale of darkness is your standard “generic evil team wants to use pokemon to conquer the world” plot.

Ironically colosseum is more edgy, they both aren't edgy though. Reborn is 1000 times worse for example.

the only thing that has edge is the Shadow pokemon, where if they get angry enough they'll attack you and use their own brand of tackle and such. But all that is mostly cosmetic, except for the purifying part
