Why would Ash use Charizard though? Even if it was powerful, Charizard hadn't listened to him even once at that point. Whatever, writers needed an excuse for Ash to lose.

I'm going through the anime right now. Ash saved him yes but Ash was also a hack trainer. Whenever he was in a pinch Ash would just have charmander fire spin or flamethrower everything away. He overlevled charmander and made no real attempts to train it or the rest of his team. Of course the proud charizard would not listen to him or enable his crap. It's Ash's fault for not using Kingler anyway.

Because ash's other mons worked hard to help ash reach the Top 16 of the tournament. All the battles, gyms, and training they did throughout the show was to reach the finals.

At the time his options were Bulbasaur and Charizard. He didn't have time to properly prepare a team because of Team Rocket. The sad thing is while Bulbasaur might have been able to beat Zippo doing so would have made it harder to do well against Sparky so Ash would have lost either way.

that's an obvious flaw with the league. someone could bring butterfree and parasect and sweep through the entire tournament because they can put other mons to sleep, and the refs will call it as a faint

He deserved the loss for not bringing Muk, Tauros or Kingler instead. He knew the only way to get Charizard to fight seriously was against a proper opponent, which Ritchie's shitmon obviously weren't.

You have this arrogant bitch who cost Ash the win - yet Ash is not angry at hin but on the contrary after all that STILL gives his everything to save him - and THAT makes that moment so powerful.
Imagen he HAD won him that battle, well of COURSE I am gonna everything to save my strong pokemon who just won me that battle, that would lower that impact considerably - but after he has been SUCH a bitch for not only that battle but so many episodes before?
