Just saw Oka_Mochi's art of game Serena. It automatically make me grief over the Serena we could have gotten instead of the Serena we did got on XY series.

Game Serena has a playful, confident and determined look in her face that anime Serena lacks. It's almost like the anime write Miette based on how Serena would have been if she wasn't forced to be bland love interest character.

Worst part is that XY even screwed the chance to develop Serena as an interesting character. Even Iris has more chance of redeeming herself than Serena.

Actually, I feel that the XY director wanted 17 year old Serena as Alain's love interest but the executive got in the way. So he purposely made Serena as unappealing as possible to make sure he has no regret on pushing her toward Ash instead of Alain.

Even the Serena from first two episode seemed to have completely different personality than Serena from rest of the series. It's almost like the series had different plan with her which they dropped.

You do that every single time somebody criticize XY series, director and Amourshipper even if I am not the one post the criticism.

Even at the end, the director make sure Serena can never reappear & he did it in a way to make himself look like an Amourshipper. He knew that future directors can still redeem Serena and make her a better character so he made sure they can never make Serena reappear again and develop her as a better character.

What I don't get is why people here seem intolerant of any criticism about Serena. I can understand shitposters like Famon, but even legitimate criticism gets attacked. You don't really see the same intolerance for negative opinions of any other girl here (Scott and May aside), it's only Serena who people here seem to want to be immune from criticism here. Why?

He has a point. Serena's character was so dominated by her crush that other elements of her character were overshadowed and left in the dust. With Chloe you don't get the same thing since "uninterested in Pokemon but then becomes interested" is the point of her character, unlike Serena where that aspect was a side factor but not the focus. Chloe's main problem is her lack of screentime.

My problem with may and dawn is that they didn't grow enough as individuals. They are the same characters from start to end. Serena and lillie are two of the most "developed" characters in this anime and episodes focusing on their inner struggle were awesome

I've seen criticisms against May or Dawn here and for the most part they seemed tolerated. Iris gets shat on here all the time but you don't see an army defending her every time that happens. People also like to shit on Lillie's character development in SM and reactions rarely if ever get ugly. It's only with Serena where if you dare say anything negative about her that the general reacts negatively. I mean just look at all the people here who complain about "Serena haters" but never say anything about the other side.

Dawn's personality didn't change too much from beginning to end (other than being more humble after her losing streak, she was overconfident in the beginning), but May is a fairly different character by late AG than she was in early Hoenn.

Like I said before, her non-crush side wasn't developed so much. I just wish there was more to her character than just "I have a crush on Ash and I changed because of it". To be fair, a lot of the more recent girls also lacked proper development, but in my opinion Serena had the most wasted potential (even more than Iris).

May does from being a lot more happy-go-lucky in the beginning and being lazy and insecure and mostly being interested in traveling, and then she takes contests more seriously after her first loss and then from there on out starts to mature and she also gets "quieter "in the Battle Frontier eps if you noticed. Her development largely mirrored Ash's from OS-DP in the span of one series.

The thing I liked about Dawn is that she could stand on her own as a character. She wasn't reliant on Ash or other companions, unlike say Serena or arguably the Alola cast who couldn't really stand on their own.

It's a bit complicated in Serena's case. Yes "her character is all about her crush" is a simplification too, but there's an element of truth to it. Like you said, her crush was the driving factor behind her character development, so in a sense, that statement is accurate at least to a certain extent. It's not like May or even Lillie where their respective fear or dislike her Pokemon were their main driving points throughout their sagas, or say Misty and her bike.

Character development is the process of building a unique, three-dimensional character with depth, personality, and clear motivations. It's not transforming one character into a completely different character.

You can write dozens of weak passive character who became confident because the hero inspired them to make them look like a developed character without actually developing them by giving them depth and personality.

There is so many things wrong with this that it feels like you pushing you fanfiction version of Serena rather than actual Serena from the anime.

First of all, Serena wasn't the meek girl you claim her to be. Anybody who watched the first XY episode knows that. Serena only acts meek around Ash just like Sakura become meek around meek around Sasuke. Remove Ash and her meek personality disappears.

Second, SERENA NEVER RUN AWAY FROM HOME. She left her home in front of her mom and even inform her about where she was going and kept contact with her. This is not running away.

It's kind of weird to think that the first 3 girls never appeared together in the anime, and Misty and Dawn never met to this day. I'm so used to seeing fanart of the first 3 girls together over a decade that it's surprising when you stop to realize they all never appeared together to this day even 20+ years into the anime.

It probably won't happen this series either. If Misty appears it will probably just be with Brock again, and if Dawn gets a cameo it will just be for something unrelated by herself later on too. I doubt they'll ever all appear at the same time

Imagine Serena reappeared again with her long hair on PM series. The series revert Serena back of early Serena from first two XY EPISODE as her meek personality completely disappears. I simply point out that there are other girl with a crush on Ash and made more improvement than Serena did therefore nether Serena and Amour were unique.

The only girl & ship that I truly liked was May and Advanceshipping. By that logic, Serena should have been a perfect substitute if the anime didn't handled her character & crush in such a disgusting way that it turned the entire anime as cringe as "Wiseman's Grandchild".

Also canon kids couple on kids anime doesn't make any move on each other when they are just 10 or bellow 12. Natsumi from Inazuma Eleven never made any move on Enduo but she married him at the end, Keita from Youkai Watch never made any move Fumi & if he tried then it backfried on him, Gao and Paruko from Futurecard Bubbyfight never express any feeling for each other yet they were married and had a child, Shizuka from Doreamon was more interested Dekusugi than Nobita.

So stop pushing your logic since kids anime clearly doesn't follows them.

As I pointed out, the director made the kiss scene to make sure Serena never reappear again and he did it in a way to make himself look like a Amourshipper while killing it.

The anime never does it with other characters because the anime wants them to reappear.

One sided kiss is still one sided, just like Shampoo forced a kiss on Ranma but her feelings was still one sided. Therefore Amour is still one sided canon just like Abilityshipping, Morphesshipping and Fireshipping.

Just because pokemon is not a shipping anime doesn't mean it's follows your rule. Pretty much everything you said count as Headcanon, not proof.

Truth is that every kids anime (specially male centred anime) ends with protagonist ending up with nobody or marring the girl from the First episode. It's doesn't matter which girl confessed, which girl kissed, which girl made a move , which girl met the protagobist first because the winner is always came from the first episode.

The only girl that appeared in the first episode was Misty and Gary's cheerleader (Delia doesn't count because she is a woman, not a girl )

So stop assuming pokemon anime followseries your rule.

They are not different show, those kids anime with same demographic as Pokemon anime. Not a single canon romance on kids anime involves kiss or confess when the prostagonist is bellow 12. All the kiss including lip lock kiss comes from girls that doesn't end up with protagonist.

Truth is that XY director made Serena as unappealing as possible because he wanted to push her toward Alain but executives got in the way. That's why he made the kiss scene to prevent future directors from introducing an improve version of her that might make him seethe over Serena being out of his Alain's reach.
