It’s just a dex that shows a map and register new mons. Talking to you like the dex always did in the anime, but it’s just a machine with a Pokémon inside. In the anime it’s different because it’s literally another character that follows Ash everywhere and have prominence in the story, just like the ghost in the Yokai Watch games and anime.
