Because Gamefreak is sick of Pokemon being their only claim to fame and wanted to try making something else. Of course they are inept as fuck, so it failed. Hopefully the next gen is better as a result since the resources are now freed up.

My personal theory is this - GF does not make that much money from Pokemon games. They already should only make a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the revenue and we have no idea how anybody getting paid, but the net worth of prominent figures in the company are much lower than they should be, likely because the TPC deal is fucked.
LTH is imo GF's attempt at making an IP to piggyback off of Pokemon's massive success so that they biggest cut of the earnings go to them.

That means that outside of royalties (which isn't a small amount but still) They only really get a lot of money from the game sales (minus the cut Ninty and Creatures get)
Hiring interns/mercenary developers directly eats into the amount of cash they get from the game sales
Mind, GF isn't poor, they get a fuckton of cash anyway, but they're also the weakest link in the ownership chain and they'll milk what they have till they literally can't anymore

Nintendo is almost entirely hands-off when it comes to its partner's game development practices
Ishihara might be able to put some pressure if he wanted, but the guy is very chummy with Game Freak and he really doesn't give a shit about the actual quality of the games that release as long as they still sell in the millions so he can work unimpeded in pushing whatever retarded shit he thinks the fans want
GF is the one that decides when they want to make a game or not, and as long as it ain't entirely retarded and related to Pokemon TPCI/Nintendo will be there to publish the game, end of

GF does whatever it wants with its games because:
A. Nintendo does NOT meddle with its partners in general (this is the same company that didn't bail out Alpha Dream and does not own Camelot/Intelligent Systems/Next Level Games) unless the game's 'quality' is beyond retarded or not to their liking

B. Ishihara and TPCI are well aware of how GF works and knows well ahead what they'll be doing

This matters. Game Freak is small and close-knit. That's not inherently bad, but the scope of Pokemon has absolutely outgrown the company.

Honestly, I'm not sure where exactly they fucked up. Up to some point from the beginning, they could handle Pokemon. Somewhere along the way, they were locked in on a franchise that was outgrowing them and taking basically all of their resources.

Because Game Freak were pushing the 3DS like Nintendo wanted them to smooth brain. They WANTED the shitty handheld to see to kids, while the WiiU died on its arse and made the Switch a reality.

They have spent the exact same time developing Gens II, II and V ad they have spent on VI, VII and VIII. In fact the two Gens that took them more than 3 years were Gen I (because they canged the initial plan mid-development) and Gen IV (because they fucked up the wi-fi connectivity). Everything else (including Gen V which didn't start until '07 as the majority of staff had been working non-stop since they only hired more staff when they wanted to get HGSS made and needed time off) were done in 3 years. The fact the franchise is keyed to that three year turnover is evident. The only thing they're lacking is experience in HD because frankly, even if they'd been working in it since the outset, they still would have cut the 'Dex to get the game made, because they only have three years before they need to push and sell a new range of merch to kids.

Because the senior devs enjoyed the idea, which was enough to warrant them giving the director a budget and staff to work on it. And as I said, it encourages staff to get out of their box and improve their skills, which can then be transferred to Pokémon (Turner's got two Director's credits already, the most of any staff member not called Masuda or Ohmori, while recently making the step up to series Art Director for example), small wonder they greenlit it, the OG devs are starting to get old and they need underlings to start stepping up soon.

They never gave a shit for the older crowd, even the IRL Mew event I went to, I was the oldest, non-accompanied teenager and of the teens without parents that were there, every one of them had a younger sibling in tow with a game boy and Pokémon in the slot.
They never gave a fuck, otherwise Johto wouldn't have been a reboot, different character an new region, with the same kiddy plot as the one before. The series plot is the coming of age of a child in the pokémon world as they leave home and explore their home region.

One also is entirely focused on GO, which is a 13-and-older smartphone game (per Google's T's&C's). Sounds like you're the one needs to cope, especially as Nintendo haven't released a Pokémon game on any of their systems, without first introducing a new, child-friendly version of that hardware since DS days. I mean, the fact they'd waited until the Switch Lite launched, with it's relative lack of Home console functionality like the regular Switch, as well as the kid-proof shell-and-joy-cons build of the actual unit should have tipped you off.

Masuda did not say that. The one that tried to make Gear Project sound important was the ACTUAL GEAR PROJECT manager. Meanwhile every other mentions of GF's workings by themselves or Masuda refers to the Pokemon team as the Core Team, including their own recruitment page.

What? No. Grab Town's credits and compare it to SwSh's credits. SwSh features every single senior staff member of the company, while the only veterans working in Town is the audio composer guy, the director of Town himself is a battle programmer that joined the company during BW production.
