How did it take Game Freak 20 years to come up with regional forms? This is probably the best thing they've added to the series, how was it not here before?

Beats me, the anime did it with the orange islands having variants, plus they had shit with the pink butterfree and the crystal onix so dunno why they didn't do it sooner since they had shit like Spinda and Castform.

Gamefreak is rigidly formulaic. They made a whole new dex for gen 2 because that's what made sense at the time and they just kept doing it for future games. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if regional variants were a TPC order to GF to capitalize off Kanto's resurgence in popularity.

The original concept of a Farfetch'd evolution was way better than this and more like an actual evolution of the base design, as opposed to just like, a redesign of Farfetch'd. If I had one complaint about the regional evolutions, it would be that, besides maybe Obstagoon none of them are really evolutions in the same sense as Meowth -> Persian or Farfetch'd -> Madame, they are all just redesigns of the base form (e.g. Perrserker).

And that's precisely the point anon. Unova being the first region away from the Japan based ones was the perfect time to introduce regional forms, yaknow divergent evolution, but GF blew it like they blow everything and it took them another 2 gens to finally do something the fans had been doing for years.

Not really. It makes less sense to do it on a urban-based setting than an island-based one.
Divergent evolution theory only became a big deal after the Darwin's finches discovery.
