Compare the first 3 gyms in both Gen 1 and 2. In Gen 1, you have a cool, barechested strongman, a cool, pretty swimmer, and a cool war veteran. It makes sense, there's natural progression, they look like normal people.
In Gen 2 you fight some blue haired faggot with a daddy complex, a purple haired asexual Tumblr abomination, and then a pink haired Tumblr user crybaby. All the cool elements are replaced with generic anime tropes and hair colors substitute personalities. That's not even to say how massively cringe the Red battle is like HOLY SHIT what a garbage fight, it's fanfiction "h-haha here's my epic OC except hes 20 levels higher than you" what a fucking joke.
I will say Gen 2 thankfully reins it in better than later gens (I don't consider anything past Gen 5 a Pokemon game) but it's still a massive piece of shit.
