Hi /vp/, been a while since I've stopped by. I didn't buy the new games when they came out like I usually do.

So now that the dust has settled, how did you find Sword/Shield and should I buy one of them? I enjoyed Sun/Moon but I know there's been a lot of internet propaganda hating on the new games.

How are they actually? is all the hate warranted?

Honestly its pretty fun not life changing or anything. The raids are a lot of fun, online battles are cancer like any gen, and the story maybe not be the most deep, but by God each gym battle felt epic.

I would say if you just enjoy pokemon then this should be a pretty fun experience. But if you are expecting something like breath of the wild did for Zelda then yeah you are going to be disappointed.

It's fine if you just sit back and enjoy the story and gym battles without too many expectations. Also you'll have to pay extra if you want the 200+ more Pokemon for the DLC, but the Isle of Armor is kinda fun to explore imo

Also you don't have to pay for the extra pokemon, it works like in the previous games, you can transfer them even if you don't have the DLC, you just can't find them in the wild
Also you can just wait a week until crown tundra comes out if you don't know if you want the DLC or not, I liked it overall, but $30 is $30
You can always get the new pack thing tho

They don't have anything to offer that older Pokemon games don't. It's incredibly dumbed down and has plenty of unnecessary regression in terms of mechanics. It does nothing new.
If you're worried about being left behind in the competitive scene just play Showdown. At least then you'll have faster battles.

It's a Pokemon game, a really rushed one made. They made a single player game to way too easy that even a game journalists can beat it, it's that bad. I liked Wild Area though and could be nice to have that feature on future.

The anger of the dexcut is not really about the quality of the game. It's about after years upon years of TPC making it a pain in the ass to get all the pokemon by making shit exclusive to spinoffs, time events, overpriced roms, etc charging a yearly subscription to hold all these Pokemon only after all that shit no longer support pokemon in latest game and saying they will never be pokemon game with all the Pokemon ever again and all their excuses for their decision (including visuals) being absolute bullshit.

But if you're not a collector autist like me go ahead and play it. I would prefer if you bought it used but, do whatever you want. But the thing is from what I see it's about sun and moon quality for a whole $60 so if that's good enough for you go ahead.

Do you want to play a JRPG or do you want to play a pokemon game? SW/SH is a pretty average pokemon game that got a lot of overblown hate over the national dex bullshit(which doesn't matter if you're just playing to beat the game and fuck around in postgame), and the shitty graphics for a major console release. When it was announced that we would be getting a mainline pokemon game on a home console a lot of people were expecting to be blown away but what we got instead was a 3ds game that removed a lot of the regular features we would've had in favor of the "wild area" to utilize the switch's processing power. If you don't already have a switch I wouldn't buy it just to experience this game. I think the real thing that decides how good or bad these games were is what the DP remakes and gen 9 look like. If we get DP remakes with 3d models and beautiful routes then I think it will show how much better SW/SH could've been.

It's a standard Pokemon game. You get your 8 badges and become champion. The actual championship is setup like a sports tournament instead of a 5 trainer gauntlet.

When you get done you can go do max raid battles to get different Gigantamax Pokémon that are cycled through monthly. There were also online tournaments that unlocked costumes and limited time giveaways (though the secret Zarude was only just released for this year's Japanese movie)

The first DLC added another exploration area that is much more densely packed and a bit of extra story

The second DLC is out Friday and then two weeks later a new cartridge version with everything included comes out.

I generally enjoyed it but thought that the game should've given the player more agency by letting them investigate the things going on behind the scenes instead or at least alongside Leon. I mean the game wasted my time by telling me to go outside of Spikemuth because I'm a gym challenger and would be of help, but no, as soon as I reach the area Leon tells me he's got it covered and to go back focusing on the gym challenge.
