Yeah because bravely default 2, yokai watch looks so incredibly great. And the only games that made this was botw because open world (which is a wiiu port) and mario, where they just decided to go back to the open world style.

Fire Emblem Three Houses is the 3DS games but with a hubworld to walk around in, which does NOT evolve the gameplay in any significant way and is mere grinding fluff they copied from another more popular game.

Everyone knew the routes would always be the same shit with different story contexts. If they weren't, you'd be looking at a company making basically 3 brand new games then selling them for the price of one, and that's not a thing Nintendo does.

fire emblem has done route splits in the past that have different maps (on a much smaller scale admittedly, i.e FE6&FE8) so it wasn’t too far fetched to expect some more variation between routes at least imo.
i just hope the next ones linear again and we stop doing the self insert shit, byleth being almost completely silent so that the player can just completely project onto them is a dogshit choice.

XY leaks were so wild. With us getting a new type and the megas mechanic, it really felt like the franchise could go anywhere. I think that's probably why SwSh had less hype, at that point we all realized that the franchise wasn't gonna evolve any further, just rotate around various gimmicks and concepts.

They said that in an interview but it's taken a little out of context. They were expecting that players of different routes would talk online and compare/contrast them. That all being said I think part of the SwSh backlash is motivated by the bulk of other big Nintendo franchises mixing things up heavily while SwSh still plays like a game from 1996.
