>it didn't work in 2D anywaysYes, it kinda did. Every mon and person was around one tile high, and there were only two speed of movement, so of course you could stretch your disbelief and say that they had to fudge it in order to make it function. In 3D, with everything one the overworld largely to scale, and with variable movement based on how hard you press the stick, there's, of course, now no reason to believe that that little slime mold rock creature that has 5 in speed and no digits on its hand a feet would be able to even keep up with your walking pace, and it would, frankly be lazy to simply tether them to your backside like they're on a leash. Am I saying SwSh did it perfectly? Fuck no. But even LGPE had missteps with following mons like Metapod scooching along and following you at the same pace as Voltorb and Electrode despite ALSO having variable speeds for mons, and LGPE also had some mons teleport to you when they got stuck in objects or if they fell behind. Granted, it had an actual animation rather than the mon just popping in and out, but still. And no one wants ot just fucking "turn it off" if it doesn't work for their mon. That's like telling someone to just turn off the animations when they complain about them taking too long.
Literally no game has done it perfectly yet. Pointing at either LGPE or HGSS and saying "b-but THIS flaw wasn't present" in lieu of the host of other flaws that were actually there is foolish.
