Pokemon was inspired by a gimmick in a show called Ultraseven. When Ultraseven's human form, Dan Moroboshi, couldn't use his transformation device, he'd throw a capsule that contains a friendly monster inside of it to fight the enemies.
These Capsule Monsters, Windom, Agira, and Miclas, would fight until they 'faint', or in Windom's case, gets fucking killed.
Windom was a robot, Agira was a dinosaur, and Miclas was a buffalo.
