You realize they've been doing that since gen 2, right? A bunch of gen 2 pokemon were holdovers from beta gen 1. Beta gen 2 pokemon came back in gens three and four. It wasn't until gen 5 that they standardized and formalized the gen process so that everything synced up with the anime, movies, vgc, and toys.

Tbqh they probably stopped taking direct inspiration from betamons after Gen 4. People say for example things like Purrloin and Liepard are based on Rinrin and Berurun, but those were designed by Unno who didn't start working for GF until Gen 3, so that is p much impossible.

The beta "Komala" does look uncanny but honestly that is just what koalas look like, and it makes sense for them to be depicted with a tree branch because that's what koalas do
