How does that even work? How do pokeballs return to their trainers after instantly being thrown to summon pokemon?

In the anime, they usually throw the balls into the air, and then it returns to their hand once the Pokemon has been released.

Idk about that. I've seen several clips of Ash flinging the ball towards the opponent's side like this. How he and countless trainers alike are able to retrieve them after doing so is a mystery.

I think that in situations like these, the glowing energy or light that forms the Pokemon also initiates a rebound push in the opposite direction almost like a spring or shotgun that sends the Pokeball back to the trainer.

I just realized, a retractable string like those yoyo balls easily solves this problem. Throw the ball anywhere you want and the pokeball will come back to your hand easy.

Throwing the ball is something that was created by the anime, not the games. In reality trainers just hold their balls and the pokemon comes out. Throwing the ball is just to make things cooler to kids

It works differently in the pokemon multiverse. E.g. in Gen1+2 timeline, it probably does need to be physically retrieved like >>45149958. Consider that Pokemon is now heavily homogenized in its depictions so the fact that it is returned to the trainer in the anime is likely how Nintendo, TPCi and GF agree that it should be.
