In the book of Revelation they’re described as a white horse & rider named conquest, a red horse & rider named war, a black horse & rider named famine, and a pale horse & rider named death.
These Pokémon were definitely modeled after the chess piece motif though with presumably no thought intended to be put toward them being part of the horsemen of the apocalypse.
