Pic related - foreshadowing for Gen 9 gimmick with Pokemon Fusion (not cross-breeding, but small Pokemon riding large Pokemon)?
Perhaps only for double battles?

It's different, dumbass. You can easily put Pikachu riding Arcanine and 20 other Pokémon but it takes a lot more to expand a fucking fusion feature like Kyurem and Necrozma.

Also another big difference here is the capability of having two abilities (both Unnerve and the Horse's ability for Calyrex's "fusion").

Nope, mechanically different (two abilities instead of just one, representing that both Pokemon are still present) and both Pokemon are still whole/intact (Calyrex is literally just riding the other Pokemon)

Megas are an entirely different form/evolution of a single Pokemon, not a mass "gimmick" like Z-Moves or Dynamax (or potential unions)

Call it what you want, GF clearly considers megas to be in league with z-moves and dynamax. The gen that introduced z-moves stopped adding megas (and you can't use them in the same battle), and dynamax replaced them both.

Regardless, there's a big difference between a union mechanic (small pokemon riding a bigger one) both in terms of battle mechanics and resources needed to model for 50+ Pokemon vs. a direct fusion mechanic akin to Kyurem (which would require entirely new models for different Pokemon combinations and would not be nearly interesting enough to warrant pursuing it)

Calyrex's Rider forms are new forms too though. It isn't a massive change, but he does undergo physical changes as a result of riding the horses, that's why they're new forms (and specifically of Calyrex). It isn't just vanilla Calyrex riding the horses as-is.

I would think it's far more likely to have an actual fusion gimmick than one pokemon riding another. Having the fused pokemon to just have a new ability than just slapping two together makes more sense though.

A better gimmick than Dynashit at the very least. Having two abilities compliment each other or cover a Pokemon's weaknesses isn't a bad idea itself, and the implementation of which could be better handled than Calyrex.

Lore wise something that could really fit the Tao trio as that is their theme, but unfortunately Turboblaze/Teravolt are the exact same thing.

Hopefully in regards to other mons, GF doesn't fuck it up should this happen. Reckless & Rock Head would be pretty fucking based, and I'm sure there are countless other examples.

It's hard to know which category Calyrex will be in.
It might be in the same boat as Urshifu, or it might be in the same boat as Kyurem and Necrozma, which draw obvious comparisons.

That's true. Honestly I agree with you that he feels like he won't be legal, but now that you've actually pointed out he is a 'dlc legend' it's equally possible he will be treated like urshifu. Possibly just the mounted forms won't be allowed

Agreed, I've always thought that if pokemon did fusions it should be 2 of them using their combined powers but not literally fusing with each other like digimon. this is one example, although this is supposed to be a regional variant according to the original illustrator, I personally see it as a fusion.
