Life-like pokemon is a fitting next step from pokemon leaving the handheld era and jumping on to home console. If we look at the transition of past gens, the predecessors have all very different and featured vast improvement. GB to GBC, GBC to GBA, GBA to DS, DS, to 3DS. But if we look at the progression of 3DS to Switch, it is the most disappointing transitions of all in terms of improving the franchise. It looks like they ported a 3DS game to Switch, or started designing gen 8 while still using all the dev techniques from the 3DS gen, or even maybe gen 8 was started to be developed as a 3DS game. Also, the fact that we are even comparing and contrasting models and graphics between games with well over a decade between (PBR to Sw/Sh) them is very telling of the level of quality of sword and shield.
