In terms of canonicity
Alpha Sapphire > Omega Ruby > Emerald > Sapphire > Ruby

To be fair, I also see the story of Sapphire/Alpha Sapphire as more canon than the story of Ruby/Omega Ruby mainly because Archie actually feels like more of the maniacal type that would actually pull through than Maxie; on top of that it would make way more sense for Archie to defeat Maxie in battle, especially with how their teams are. Hell, even in the Adventures manga Archie defeated Maxie so that Archie could live, it's literally common sense. He would've stopped Maxie's plans of awakening Groudon easily.

So yes, lore-wise, I believe that Sapphire is the way to go. Secondary most canon lore is Emerald, where both teams awaken their respective legendary, which would make sense as they don't try to stop each other at that moment. This is the only logical way for Maxie to actually be able to awaken Groudon without getting his ass curbstomped by his pirate counterpart.

It makes sense in Sapphire and Alpha Sapphire because Kyogre is where it should, in a submarine cavern, while Groudon is obviously in the volcano even if you never meet him. It's the opposite approach the one that makes no sense

The funny thing about Adventures is that the writer clearly agreed Sapphire was the canon version and made team Aqua the main villains, but then ORAS came around and he had to explain why Archie and Maxie suddenly switched personalities. Back in RSE, he figured team Aqua as the main villains meant they were the ones with the high tech base. So he made Team Aqua the more scientifically advanced team while team Magma were thugs living in caves.

Which is kind of my point. Assuming Sapphire is canon means Team Aqua are the ones with the high tech resources, but ORAS made Team Magma the scientist types instead.

They want to reset the world to its primordial state, because they're convinced that humans have ruined the environment too much for it to be saved without an hard reset. The remake hints that both Archie and Maxie worked on Sea Mauville, and their experience there (total oppression of the workers and exploitation of natural resources to an unhealthy level) shaped their goals for the future: Archie wanting to give back the world to the pokémon and remove humans from the big picture, and Maxie wanting to improve human technology and give them more space to progress so to find a way for a more sustainable progress.

Shelly and Tabitha, on the other hand, were Devon employees. What is stated is that Aqua and Magma were originally one team that split into two.
