They mostly became easier by expanding your toolset (Gen 6 was criminally trivially easy for other reasons), but Gen 7 at least has a lot of small challenges that I feel were harder than previous gens throughout the game. I guess if you used up all the items, it would be even easier though.

Aside from free heals before a rival, most of the difficulty was in not memorizing the type chart and even in hindsight adding that hint system in Gen 7 wasn't even that big a deal unless competitive players rely on exploiting the opponent's ignorance.
