Unironically BW. They are recent enough to be comparable to modern ganes, but the small scale pokedex and fairly linear gameplay won't overwhelm a new player.

FireRed is very straightforward and has a small roster of Pokemon available. If they find that boring show them Platinum, it's the definitive Pokemon game.

it's really sad how this is true.

I made my nephew play FRLG and HGSS and he liked them but he still never cared about Pokemon and kept playing minecraft and fortnite more instead because he had no autism
while I kept around this shit franchise for years because of my autistic ass
